Jewelry Appraisal 101

Have you recently received or bought a valuable jewelry item and not sure of its worth? Then consider finding a jewelry appraiser to draw up a formal report for you. Keep in mind that your motivation for an appraisal determines the kind of report you’ll receive and the cost of the appraisal. A detailed appraisal for insurance purposes will have a different cost than if you want an appraisal because you plan to sell or donate the item. The cost for appraising a single item can range from $25 for a walk-in, on-the-spot brief appraisal to one costing well over $100 by a certified appraiser who uses the latest equipment.
While many appraisers have had years of experience, it behooves you to find a certified appraiser who has had formal education and passed exams related to gemology. This person is often a member of reputable organization as well. To find an appraiser, you can start with the International Society of Appraisers or the Gemmological Association and Gem Testing Laboratory of Great Britain.
