Donuts and my grandmother

0

Saturday night I had a dream that my paternal grandmother, Pearl Fortney, was still among the living and making me laugh as she always did.  I didn’t want the dream to end, but it did and it left me with the strongest craving for Grandma Pearl’s donuts.

A quick search of the pantry and refrigerator told me I was in luck.  I know this is an old recipe, but, although not for the faint-of-heart where fat and carbs are concerned, it is still a good one.

Grandma’s Donuts

I tube refrigerator biscuits

Vegetable oil (enough to fill a heavy pan with at least 1” oil)

Different toppings.

Heat oil to about 350 degrees.  Flatten  each biscuit and tear a hole in the middle to look like a donut.  Fry on one side until golden brown, turn and cook the other side until brown.  Drain for only a few minutes on paper towels.

Now comes the fun part.  Cover or frost each hot donut with your favorite topping.

Suggestions:

Cinnamon sugar

Confectioners’ sugar

chocolate glaze made from powdered sugar, cocoa, milk

Vanilla glaze  made from powdered sugar, vanilla, milk

Sprinkle with chocolate jimmies

Sprinkle with nuts

Use your imagination.

Sunday morning breakfast was great with hot donuts and coffee.

Enjoy!
